The Rainbow Expedition

The Rainbow Expedition is all about getting people, especially those with disabilities, outside to experience the great healing powers of the outdoors. It has been proven time and time again that being outdoors can improve your physical, mental, and social well-being.

William O. Douglas is credited with saying that the struggle of man against man produces jealousy, deceit, frustration, bitterness and hate. But the struggle of man against the mountains is different. Man then bows before something that is bigger than he. And when he does that, he finds serenity, humility and dignity.

Being outside facing a challenge, no matter how big or small, also helps in gaining an understanding of the immense value of partners, friends, and family, and how important those relationships are to a successful lifestyle.

The Rainbow Expedition began in June of 1999 when paraplegic Jeff Pagels, with huge media attention and extensive support from the Outdoor Industry, climbed to 11,300 feet on Washington State's Mt. Rainier before descending due to poor weather conditions.

A video documentary produced for the climb continues to win awards in the film industry including a nomination for an Emmy Award. Copies of the video, which show a wide range of our sponsors' products, are free and available upon request
